I Remember When

Okay, I’m telling my age, but it doesn’t matter because I consider it a blessing that I have been out of high school over 30 years. Wow! I can hardly believe it myself. It seems like just only yesterday that I was there. But, alas, time marches on and the years roll by until one day you’re looking back and saying, “I remember when.” But, that’s only if you’re blessed to live to have that time. It used to bother me how many of my classmates had passed throughout the years because I was still considering us to be fairly young. However, from what we’ve witnessed in recent years, it really doesn’t matter your age. Whether it’s the tragic news of a school shooting where parents of elementary students have to make funeral arrangements or an ordinary day where a car speeding down a busy street smashes into several vehicles causing several fatalities, including that of an infant child, it is understood that death knows no age.
However, we, as believers, may mourn for those lives lost, but the Bible teaches us in I Thessalonians Chapter 4 verses 13 through 14, “But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.” (“1 Thessalonians 4:13 ESV - - Bible Gateway”) We, as Christians, live our lives in hope. We know that things happen unexpectantly. We know that loved ones pass away. We know that bad things can happen to good people. But, we, also, know and believe that our Heavenly Father is faithful and whatever He brings us to, He will bring us through. And because of this, we look forward in faith.
But, how can we look forward in faith? There’s so much going on? How do I know that I won’t become another statistic or my loved one won’t become another hashtag? The honest truth is that we don’t know. What we do know is that we can’t do it on our own. That’s why we look to Jesus who is the “author and finisher of our faith” (“Bible Gateway Passage: Hebrews 12 - King James Version”). And we trust that He has a plan and a purpose for all that He allows. We don’t want to be like Peter when he was looking around at the circumstances surrounding him, we want to keep our eyes focused on Jesus. Day in. Day out. No matter come what may. Let’s focus on Jesus and trust that He will take care of everything else.
